Europeans had been exploring the New World for more than 100 years, they had the colony of James Town in Virginia which had been going for about 13 years before the Mayflower set sail. In 1620 the Mayflower set sail with the intension of going to Virginia. The crew sighted Cape Cod on the Eastern edge of Massachusetts on the morning of 9 November 1620. They landed in New England not realising at first they had landed in the wrong place and faced the harsh New England winter, some tried to sail South but failed and they decide to stay there. What makes this trip stand out is that the pilgrims decided they would set rules for governing them selves and this became the philosophical foundation for the constitution, which would govern the United States more the 150 years later.
